Grab the Guac : How Avocados Help Your Eye Health

Avacados and eggs

Don’t feel guilty about paying for the guacamole (we know it costs extra) or enjoying that avocado toast (it’s delicious). Partaking in the popular so-called “super-food” avocado is actually fantastic for more reasons than its scrumptiousness. It’s super healthy, too! Nutrient-dense and full of the good fat your body needs, avocados are an easy way to balance out your diet and give yourself all sorts of health benefits.

A single ounce of avocado has 80 grams of lutein – which is essentially an antioxidant for your eyes and brain. Leafy greens and eggs also have the stuff, or you can add lutein to your diet through supplements. You may be surprised to learn, however, that some of these supplements only have 10 grams of lutein. Lutein is critical to your health – especially in this day and age. Lutein helps with filtering harmful high-energy blue light, which emits from most digital devices. Keeping high levels of lutein in your diet also helps reduce your risk of some eye diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.

Vitamins C, B5, E, and K, and to a lesser extent A, B1, B2, and B3 are also prevalent in avocados. They don’t contain cholesterol or sodium (though that guac you pick up will probably have some salt). They also contain more potassium than bananas and are loaded with monounsaturated fatty acids. “Fat?” You may be thinking, “I don’t want any fat…”

Yes, you do! Monounsaturated fats are excellent for your heart. They’re also found in olive oil, and have been linked to reduced inflammation, and shown to have beneficial effects on genes linked to cancer.

Not only are avocados nutrient-dense themselves, but they can even help your nutrient intake with other plant foods. In a study, it was shown that adding avocado to a salad or salsa helped increase antioxidant absorption up to 15-fold.

If you want to feel really good about what you’re eating, add avocado to your plate. It’s beneficial to your health on the whole, and who knows? Maybe we can start a new saying: An avocado a day keeps the eye doctor away.
