Shop Local this Small Business Saturday

Central Illinois wants you to shop local!

Small Business Saturday is right around the corner – falling on Saturday, November 26 right after Thanksgiving. Nationally, American Express has encouraged Shop Local initiatives since 2010. In 2011, the United States Senate unanimously passed a resolution of support for Small Business Saturday, so this year’s celebration marks the 5th official year!

Bard Optical has its own rich history of serving the Central Illinois community. Established in 1941 by Dr. A. Arthur Bard, Diana Hall purchased the company in 1981. From there, she grew our single office company into a local leader in vision care excellence. We offer something the national chains can’t – a local touch. All of our offices from Rock Island to Forsyth, Galesburg to Champaign, give back to our local communities. We partner with local charities every office anniversary, as well as collecting for the Heart of Illinois United Way year-round.

Shopping at any local businesses can be a game-changer!

Shopping local provides support for schools, police, and fire departments – taxes stay local, helping local education, government, and service employees. For every $100 spent, $68 stays in your community (versus only $43 from a national chain, or online where none stays local). This money not only helps pay public workers’ salaries, but also drives the local economy!

Supporting Small Business Saturday means strengthening your community. Local business owners live in your town, attend the same schools and churches, donate to the same local organizations, shelters, or little league teams. The more you support your local stores, the more you support your own neighbors.

This, in turn, helps to create jobs! Local places can afford to pay more staff with more sales, which may mean longer business hours or better service for you – all adding up to a better experience every time you shop. More than half of US jobs since 1995 were created by small business – an estimated 8 million jobs!

Beyond this, shopping locally means you can find unique items. In a superstore, you’ll find the same mass-produced products you would find all over. Local stores feature unique finds from community artists and creators, reflecting a piece of the community you live in.

Shopping small business locally all adds up to a thriving community! Supporting your neighbor’s businesses means you have a variety of coffee shops, hair salons, boutique clothing options, restaurants, bars, and more – what would be left without these places? This holiday season, please consider shopping small at your local businesses to help maintain our vibrant communities.

This Small Business Saturday, Bard Optical will be offering 25% off all Ray-Ban sunglasses! Available all day (offices open 9AM-3PM) – call for an appointment today – walk-ins welcome.
