Try This 1 Thing for Better Vision Health in 2018

Our eyes are very special, as they are the only organs we have that can detect sight. We only get two, so we should try to take the best care of them that we can. We can do this many different ways, but there’s one very easy and often overlooked strategy we neglect to pursue. Here’s 1 easy thing you can do to help improve vision health:

The most beneficial way to improve vision health is to spend less time staring at phone, computer, and television screens. Many of us who work desk jobs or spend a lot of our time in front of screens could use a break, as this is an issue that exacerbates eye issues and causes eye strain. We spend copious amounts of time each day peering into electronic devices, which is unavoidable for those of us whose work is based on a computer. However, there is always time to pause and rest.

The technical term for what many of us experience when we spend too much time staring at our electronics is “digital eye strain.” It’s not uncommon at all nowadays, as we spend more time using cell phones and computers for nearly everything. Some of the symptoms include:

  • Dry eyes
  • Headache
  • Blurred vision
  • Neck and shoulder pain

If you experience any of these symptoms on a regular basis, then you most likely stuffer from digital eye strain. While these are relatively minor indications of an underlying issue, they can be easily prevented to make your life better. One simple solution is to take less screen time!

However, we are all painfully aware that this is not something we can all do. It does help to spend time reading printed media rather than e-books to reduce screen time, along with checking newspapers rather than your feed on social media. Those of us who work on computers face a more daunting task: how do I continue my work while taking a break from my computer?

It has been suggested that one should take a break for 20 seconds for every 20 minutes of screen time. This can be as simplistic as getting up from your desk to grab coffee, or as engaging as conversing with a colleague. If taking a break is frowned upon at your place of employment, there are still other solutions that don’t require you to leave your space!

It’s considered beneficial to sit arm’s length away from your screen—the same distance you should be away from your steering wheel when you drive. This can reduce eye strain since you will have more space between yourself and the screen, which is generally doable for those of us at desks or using cell phones. If this makes it difficult for you to see the text on the screen, increase the size! This is frequently recommended to help reduce strain.

Using a screen too often is no good for our vision health, so by taking initiative and trying to reduce screen time, we can take steps towards having better health overall!
